“Legal issues for a Sustainable agrifood chain”
The Food Law Academic Network (FLAN) has been established with the goal to foster the debate on Food law issues.
The second “Food Law Academic Network Conference” will be held in Italy, on 15-17 May 2024 at the University of Bari, on the topic:
“Legal issues for a Sustainable agrifood chain”
Around this theme, we aim to explore the policy dynamics and the relationship between the actors involved in the agrifood chains as players implementing the different aspects of sustainability; analyse key issues related to the "sustainable food system” defined as a comprehensive concept by the EU Commission; identify legal models, best practices and case studies related to sustainability issues; finally, present a perspective of policy and legal schemes aimed at identifying a sustainability paradigm for this sector.
The call for abstracts is open till 15th March 2024
This call for abstract invites researchers and practitioners to submit work (scientific papers on legal issues, presentation of case studies and best practices) related, but not restricted, to:
1) ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES AND CLIMATE CHANGE: IMPACTS ON THE AGRIFOOD SECTOR
What are the effects of climate change on legislative policies and what perspectives and implications could have on sanitary and phytosanitary measures?
How do environmental and climate issues affect competition law and food quality recognition in the agrifood sector?
What is the relevance of the “One Health Approach” in environmental policies?
Environment vs. agrifood production –could this old-age dilemma be revised in light of the sustainability paradigm?
What impact could the EU Soil Monitoring Law have on agro-environmental issues?
2) CONTROVERSIES IN CIRCULAR ECONOMY: UNDERSTANDING THE ROLES OF FARMERS, BUSINESSES, CONSUMERS, AND LABELLING TOOLS
Food loss and waste: is there a coherent and harmonised approach or a fragmentation of actions?
How should we include Developing Countries’ economies in EU strategies for implementing a Circular economy? What are the effects on global market?
What are the new perspectives on circular economy in national and EU policy approaches and what about their implementation in contractual schemes?
Consumers response to circular economy: what are the legal tools for a sustainable nutrition education?
3) WORKERS AND HUMAN RIGHTS CONCERNS IN THE FOOD SUPPLY CHAIN: PROCESSING, TRADE AND CONSUMERS PERCEPTION
In light of the overarching goals of sustainability, how is the role of the European Social Pillar expected to evolve and increase in importance? In particular, what impact will the implementation of social pillar measures have on the EU agri-food sector? And what impact does this have in relation to gender equality?
To what extent the concept of “just transition” is deemed relevant in establishing a sustainable agrifood system?
What is the role of Trade unions?
Due diligence rules in the European Union: What are the future scenarios for EU business, environment and workers? What are the effects on the global market? What about the opinion of Southern countries?
